Recorded in February 2010 alongside Hays Holladay (Bluebrain) during one long weekend at Inner Ear while (the band wound up trapped into the studio during the largest snowstorm to hit D.C. since 1779), the EP’s six songs wind through myriad sounds, textures, and styles. There’s the head-nodding, guitar-mony-driven bounce of “Injera”; the cascading psychedelic sweeps of “Golden Hour”; the epic, 14-minute “Toll Teller,” with its Swiss-watch guitar figures and unabashed Queen homage. Progress—be it the kind that involves compound meter or a more personal sense of forward motion--is Hume’s M.O. Each incarnation of the band’s constantly metamorphosing releases has been more ambitious than the last. But "Penumbra" sets a new standard. Every band dreams big, but Hume dreams bigger.
